At one point during pre-production of "A New Hope", the stormtroopers were to be equipped with lightsabers. Even though that never happened, the Empire’s foot soldiers became an instant hit. Thousands of fans around the world dress up and march on a multitude of occasions. In 2003, a fan called Leon Clarance even ran the entire New York Marathon in full armour!
