The flag as we know it today was designed by a 17-year-old student as part of a history project. Robert G. Heft created the flag in anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states and submitted it to Congress for consideration. His design was selected over 1,500 others and the president informed him of the news via phone call. Heft had his grade changed from a B- to A!
