Miyazaki draws inspiration from surprising places, like Wales for instance. He witnessed the 1984 miner’s strike there, which served as inspiration for Castle in the Sky, which was partially set in a mining community. He also based Howl’s Moving Castle on a children’s book by Welsh author Diana Wynne Jones.
