Pat Riley, the slick-dressed showtime Lakers’ coach and NBA executive, trademarked the word “Three-peat” in 1988. After the Chicago Bulls won three straight championships for their first time in the 90s, Riley was paid $300,000 in royalties. Interestingly, Lakers' owner Jerry Buss promised poker legend Johnny Chan an NBA championship ring if he could “Three-peat” at the World Series of Poker in 1989—but it was not meant to be.
