Interesting fact:

The woman in question here was not only setting out to be the first woman to fly around the world, but she was in fact one of the most famous people in the world at the time. Five years earlier, in 1932, she had already made a name for herself as the first woman to fly solo, non-stop across the Atlantic. As such, the world was watching when she went missing along with her navigator over the Pacific Ocean. Her last radio messages indicated that she was unable to locate Howland Island or a nearby U.S. Coast Guard ship in what was to be a re-fueling stop. The ensuing search mission was the largest and most expensive in U.S. history, and was called off after two weeks. No wreckage has ever been found.
