American films were rather — how should I put this — repressed prior to the 1960s. So much so that a toilet didn’t appear in an American film until 1960! And the film that broke the toilet hiatus? Well, it was none other than the horror classic Psycho. Evidence is flushed away about a quarter way into the film and Hitchcock employs quite the closeup on the toilet bowl. Has cinema improved as a direct result of this shot? Without question.
