At the very beginning of ‘Firefly’, there were only 5 crew members in the script. Later on, Whedon increased the number of characters from 5 to 9. Who was the first and who was the last in his list – who knows? But it’s clear that Malcolm Reynolds was safe from day one. Originally the role was written for Nicolas Brendon but he had a very busy schedule.
