This is a Cajun French expression that is super popular in Louisiana. The first American Mardi Gras took place in 1699 when French explorers celebrated landing in Louisiana. When the Spanish arrived they banned these francophone celebrations until 1812! Nowadays Louisiana makes Mardi Gras a national holiday.
