Interesting fact:

Back in the original Red and Blue games, you could use a rod and actually fish for Pokémon. You could do this at any of the Rhydon statues in the Pokémon gyms or in the watery area of the Cerulean City. Pokémon you could fish included Magikarp, Goldeen and Poliwag.
